Pumpkins, Spooky Science & Fall Fun: Your Tampa Bay Weekend Shortlist | October 16–18

Pumpkins, Spooky Science & Fall Fun: Your Tampa Bay Weekend Shortlist | October 16–18

Is anyone else wondering how we're already halfway through October?

The calendar is filling up, Halloween costumes are becoming a serious topic of conversation, and somehow we're still waiting for Florida to get the memo that it's fall!

But whether the weather cooperates or not, there's plenty happening around Tampa Bay this weekend.

From pumpkin patches and spooky science experiments to neighborhood fall festivals and a little shopping for the plant lovers, we've rounded up six experiences worth getting out of the house for.

Some are close to home in Southshore and East Hillsborough County, while others might just be worth packing a few snacks and making a day of it.

Here's what's making our OSC Weekend Shortlist for October 16–18.

1. A Little Science, a Little Spooky: MOSI's Spooktacular Science

Saturday, October 17 | 6–9 PM | Tampa

Who says Halloween has to be all haunted houses and jump scares?

MOSI is mixing science with a little Halloween magic, and we're here for it! Think creepy candy stations, liquid nitrogen ice cream, mysterious experiments, a planetarium experience, and even an opportunity to fly drones.

Kids can get hands-on in the Potions Lab, making their own Monster Muck, while the whole family gets to explore science with a spooky twist.

Why it made our list: It's a Halloween experience that offers something a little different, especially for curious kids who love experimenting and discovering how things work.

Admission: $20 for children, $30 for adults; MOSI members receive $5 off.

2. Fall Fun Close to Home: Calvary Lutheran Church Fall Festival

Saturday, October 17 | 4–6 PM | Ruskin

Sometimes the best weekend plans are the ones happening right in our own backyard.

Calvary Lutheran Church is hosting its community Fall Festival, complete with trunk-or-treating, pony rides, carnival games, a petting zoo, inflatables, crafts, and plenty of opportunities for the kids to show off those Halloween costumes.

And one of the best parts? It's a local outing that doesn't require an entire day of planning.

Why it made our list: We love finding Southshore events that give families an easy opportunity to get out, connect with neighbors, and let the kids have some fun.

Admission: Free community event.

3. A Pumpkin Festival Worth the Drive: Hunsader Farms

Saturday & Sunday, October 17–18 | 9 AM–5 PM | Bradenton

If your idea of a fall weekend includes pumpkins, farm animals, something delicious to eat, and more activities than you can fit into one afternoon, this might be your kind of outing.

Hunsader Farms' annual Pumpkin Festival brings together live entertainment, hayrides, farm experiences, children's activities, and classic fall festival treats.

There are also stunt shows, a pumpkin cannon, and plenty of opportunities for those annual family pumpkin pictures.

Why it made our list: This is one of those outings you can turn into a full family adventure rather than a quick stop.

Admission: $15 ages 10+, $5 ages 5–9, free for children under 5, plus $5 parking. Cash only for admission and parking. Some activities cost extra.

4. Fall Meets the Waterfront: St. Pete Fall Festival

Saturday & Sunday, October 17–18 | 11 AM–7 PM | St. Petersburg

Pumpkins with a waterfront view? Only in Florida!

The St. Pete Pier is bringing fall festivities to the waterfront with a pumpkin patch, family entertainment, live music, a Kids Zone, bounce activities, and even a Kids Rave.

It's a fun alternative to the traditional farm experience, especially if your family enjoys making a day out of exploring St. Petersburg.

And honestly, we love the idea of combining a fall festival with some time along the waterfront.

Why it made our list: It's a great mix of family entertainment, seasonal activities, and an opportunity to enjoy one of Tampa Bay's most recognizable waterfront destinations.

Admission: The pumpkin patch is free to visit; some festival activities and purchases may cost extra.

5. A Sunday Afternoon in FishHawk: FishHawk Fall Festival

Sunday, October 18 | Noon–3 PM | Lithia

If you're hoping to keep Sunday's plans simple, here's another local favorite to consider.

The FishHawk Fall Festival at Grace at Lithia is bringing an afternoon of family-friendly activities to the community, including hayrides, bounce houses, games, face painting, costumes, and a pumpkin patch.

It's the kind of event where the kids can play, parents can enjoy a little time outdoors, and everyone gets to celebrate the season together.

Why it made our list: It's free, close to home for many East Hillsborough families, and has plenty of activities geared toward kids.

Admission: Free.

6. A Little Something for the Grown-Ups: Sarasota Indie Market & Plant Swap

Sunday, October 18 | 10 AM–2 PM | Sarasota

Not every weekend outing has to revolve around pumpkins and bounce houses.

Sometimes it's nice to wander a local market, discover small businesses, enjoy a coffee, and find something unexpected.

The Sarasota Indie Market & Plant Swap at Salt Your Soul Gift Co. is bringing together local makers, artists, vintage sellers, plant enthusiasts, and independent businesses.

There's also a community plant swap, so if your plant collection could use another addition (or five), this one might be calling your name.

Why it made our list: We love experiences that introduce families to creative local businesses. Plus, it's a fun change of pace from the usual fall festival lineup.

Admission: Free.

Are we dressing the kids up for a neighborhood fall festival, exploring spooky science at MOSI, or making a day trip out of pumpkin picking and fall treats?

The good news is that you don't need to do everything.

Pick an experience that fits your family's schedule, invite another family to join you, and make a little room for something fun.

That's really what the OSC Weekend Shortlist is about: helping families spend less time searching for something to do and more time enjoying their weekends together.
